The Most Popular Streaming Services by Subscribers

Today’s Choices in Streaming Services

Video streaming has become an essential part of global entertainment, with the increasing availability of affordable high-speed Internet and the proliferation of smart devices. Today, consumers have a lot of different choices when it comes to those streaming services. Options range from Netflix and Amazon Prime to HBO Max and Apple TV. The popularity of these, and other, services have transformed the way people interact with content giving them unprecedented access to a vast library of movies, TV shows, and documentaries.

A Look at the Map

Netflix and Amazon Prime

According to this map from the Visual Capitalist | FlixPatrol, Netflix is still the most popular video streaming service worldwide, with the highest number of subscribers in 78 countries with over 220 million customers globally. Netflix’s success can be attributed to its vast library of original and licensed content, user-friendly interface, and affordability. The streaming giant’s dominance is apparent in countries such as the UK, Brazil, Germany, France, and Mexico, where it has the most subscribers, by far, of any service, even beating out Amazon Prime, which has over 200 million global subscribers (most of which are bundled subscribers from the Amazon Prime delivery service).

The Leading Streaming Media Services

Netflix and Disney+

Netflix is, however, facing increasing competition from other streaming services, including Disney+ and HBO Max. Disney+, has accrued over 160 million global subscribers and it has emerged as a significant player in the streaming industry. It offers a vast library of Disney-owned movies and shows, including those from the Marvel and Star Wars franchises. Even though, the graphic shows that Disney+ only made it to the top of India’s subscriber base, the service is quite new. Whereas Netflix launched its website in 1998, Disney only recently launched their service in 2018 making remarkable progress on subscriber acquisition and retention.

HBO Max

HBO Max launched even more recently, in May 2020, and now boasts over 73 million subscribers. The streaming service offers a diverse range of content, including HBO originals, Warner Bros. movies, and popular TV shows such as Friends and The Big Bang Theory. With the recent acquisition of Warner by Zaslav at Discovery, it will be interesting to see how it fares as a contender in the future.

Niche Players

Besides these major players, there is still room for other niche players in the streaming sector. Some are popular in specific regions, as you can see on the map, such as KinoPoisk in Russia and iFlix in Southeast Asia. These services offer localized content and pricing, giving them a unique differentiator for their subscribers.

The rise of video streaming has given consumers the power to choose which content they watch, when they watch it, and how they watch it. As streaming services continue to evolve and innovate, the future of entertainment looks bright, promising even more exciting and engaging content for viewers around the world.
